FINDING SHINA PETERS IN LAGOS ISLAND
I'm not sure about my peers, but for me, the name Shina Peters brings back strong memories of Aunty-gimme-cake parties, Shiny shoes, poofy dresses, party Jollof-rice and of course dancing competitions. That's why I fell in love with the music of Shina Peters as a young girl...his music made me want to Dance!
It was a regular Friday afternoon working at the radio station, that day I was hosting #thekazbah that day so it meant a lot of throwback classic Nigerian songs and I put on "Afro Juju 1" by Shina Peters, and I grooved in the studio steadily for 16 minutes. Once I sat back down and glanced at the twitter feed I saw a few notifications telling me Shina Peters would be performing at Afropolitan vibes in Freedom Park, Lagos that same day! What are the odds?
So I grabbed my phone, spoke to a few friends and Chioma said she was game, so we met up right after my shift and proceeded to drive to Lagos Island. Or so we thought.
After Spending 30 minutes on the same spot at Adeola Odeku, she suggested we jump on a keke(which would never have occured to me...dont ask why not).
Eventually we made it to Freedom park, what was once a prison in Lagos Island, bumped into the homie Mo ( I will wax lyrical about his cinematography in another post) and got to watch Simi, SDC(Show Dem Camp) Poe and Funbi perform before it was time to bring on the main act.
And Oh wat a main act he was. Shina Peters took me (and dare I say everyone else present) back to the early 90's of Lagos Party life, the groove was right and the band was tight. It was all in all a pretty awesome night at Afropolitan vibes.
