This Week On My Playlist Ep.2: A Young Zulu Michael Jackson
This week i'm feeling adventurous and nostalgic all together and it's meant my listening ear has been finding the slightly off beat music;(but I guess that's usually me) but also music with echoes of something once remembered. A little Nostalgia, a little futuristic yearning.
1. Liam Lynch properly introduced me to Smiso Zwane. Also known as Okmalumkoolkat, and discovering him was like finding "A young Zulu Michael Jackson". He takes the cool street we love Cassper Nyovest for and ups his quirk level in a way that makes you think "this guy was born this way". Check out what Fader Magazine had to say about him here, and watch my favourite new Music Video, 100 MaCassette.
2. Kamar Tachio dropped new music. Signed to Aristokrat Records (the same record label that discovered Burna boy), Kamar dropped an E.P called "The Audition " in 2014, and he proved that he can sing. In 2016 Kamar's new track Naira is a breath of fresh air from the usual R n B crooning we know Kamar for, but his soulful sound is still present. Coupled with his commentary on the devaluation of the Nigerian Naira and the vibe on the streets of Lagos, the song is a timely reminder that "We work hard for this Sh*t...when your time reach, hustle go pay".
3. Afrobeat will always have a place in my music life and after doing some research i discoverd Fela collaborater Dele Sosimi. Check out this mix below
And finally a classic by Gil Scott Heron which I revisited thanks to the Motion picture DOPE by Rick Famuyiwa.
Let me know what you think!x
